Do's and Don'ts when Supporting Bereaved Families

 

We mean well, but sometimes our attempt to comfort bereaved parents causes more heartache. Saying nothing at all can be equally as hurtful. The following tips are meant to help your words be truly supportive and to alleviate some of the anxiety around "saying the wrong thing."

Helpful Things to Say:

  • I am so sorry
  • I am at a loss for words
  • I don't know what to say right now
  • I love you 

 

     Do not...

    • Do not offer cliches
    • Do not judge or offer advice
    • Do not compare losses

      Hurtful Things to Say:

      • Everything happens for a reason
      • At least....
      • Time heals all wounds
      • It's going to be okay
      • Things will get better
      • Let go, move on
      • Have faith
      • Be thankful
      • Keep busy
      • God has a plan
      • It will be different next time 
      • Sometimes it just takes a while
      • It will happen when it’s supposed to
      • You are young, you can have more children
      • Be thankful you have other children
      • Your baby would have been very sick if he/she lived
